Studio opening February 2011 (filled)

Update: We currently have no openings. We leave this post here so interested parties can see our selections process.

Thank you for your interest in learning more about becoming a member/share-holder of our housing cooperative. This post provides basic information about our property and our community. Please search our website for additional information about our community.

We have a vacancy coming up on or after Feb. 15 2011. The unit available to a new member is a studio with monthly assessments of approximately $500 and a membership share-value of approximately $9,250. You can see a floor plan and photos here.

All members contribute labor to govern, manage, and maintain this 22-unit, 1920s Spanish style building, located near UCB/Berkeley BART. Co-op reviews assessments annually with goal of having well-maintained housing at moderate cost. We are not a collective, group house or co-housing.

If you are interested in being considered for membership, please download and fill out our application form:(zipped Word file 19kb or Word file 102 kb or PDF file 145 kb). See below for notes on application formats. Completed applications can be filled out and emailed, or printed out and sent via regular mail or delivered through the mail slot to the right of our front door. We will not accept faxed applications. Please provide complete information.

We will review all applications that are returned to us by Sunday, January 9, 2011 — applications received after that date may not be considered. We anticipate that we will be contacting applicants in the following few days that we’re interested in interviewing. If you anticipate not being readily reachable and/or available for interviews, please let us know as soon as possible so we can try to make other arrangements.

We will show the unit to those applicants we select for an interview, and we will be posting a floorplan and photos of the unit on the weekend of December 25/26. If you need additional information, please send us an e-mail or leave us a phone message (e-mail is the easiest and preferred communication method for us and will get you a faster response). Thanks!

Application formats:

  • Zipped file: This file is in ZIP format so it is compressed to a smaller size. You’ll need to open the zip file to find the Word file inside. Most computers should have a zip-opening program already installed.
  • Word file: This file can be read by Microsoft Word, Open Office Writer, or other common word processors. The document is designed so you can type directly into it, then either print the file and send it in, or save it and email it in.
  • PDF file: This file can be read with any PDF reader. You can type directly into the document. If you have Adobe Reader, you can save the file and then email it in to us. You’ll see a “Submit Form” button in the upper right corner above the document, which will walk you through the steps to email it (you’ll be saving a copy of the document, then attaching it to an email to send to us).

With either the Word or PDF file, you can also print out the file and complete it by hand (however, if you do this you won’t be able to email it in, and please remember to write legibly).

  1. I am happy to find some alternatives to sole property ownership. I have been considering this type of arrangement. The application is ordinary. Can you clarify what the preferences are for deciding on candidates. Specifically are you inclusive of alternative lifestyles and or retired on a fixed income? Whether you prefer the studio is occupied by a single or couple occupant(s)? Thanks inspired, SF Bay Native.

  2. Dear SF Bay Native: We have no standardized preferences. Generally, we are looking for people with experience in cooperatives, but not all new members have that. If you read about us on the website, and on the Information Sheet, this should give you an idea of who we are and, perhaps, what we are looking for in new members.

That being said, we DO NOT discriminate in any way that violates federal, state, or local laws.
